You know what I love?
A good rags to riches story.
A true underdog overcoming. The unlikely heroine achieving what no one thought possible.
You know what I don't love?
The movie montage that shows the "becoming" in 90 seconds.
The journalistic fast-forward that says "and he worked hard for years."
I understand that the hard work and trials and challenges are not social media acceptable or made for tv - but they are courageously human.
I recently read these lines in a book and fell instantly in love with their sentiment
"Nobody wants to show you the hours and hours of becoming. They'd rather show the highlight of what they've become." - Angela Duckworth, Grit.
Well, I want to show you the hours and hours of becoming because THAT is what is real. There is no fast-forward or movie montage in life. The only way to skip over the hard work and blood, sweat, and tears is to be absent. And you can't be absent from your own life.
You see, there is no destination. You don't arrive. The journey from where you are to where you want to be is never ending. And that, my friends, is so wonderful. We spend an entire beautiful lifetime of metamorphosing. This is it. This day, this decision. Isn't that amazing?! We get overwhelmed by the entire process but there is freedom in recognizing that right now there is just this one step in front of you. You can take that step. You can make that step meaningful, purposeful, and brave.
There is beauty in becoming. Becoming is brave.
